Japanese Black Pine - initial styling
Well it's coming to my favourite time of year for the black pines. I thought I'd upload one that's just had it's first styling with a quick before and after shot.
Before This one's not been in the collect for a long time, maybe 6 months or so.
Here it is after a few hours work.
After It's got plenty of work left to go but as far as an initial styling goes, I'm happy.

Lovely pine Scott and so healthy and vigorous looking. You have done a great job styling it but I wonder about the necessity of the first branch on the left, it seems to me the weight of the foliage should lean with the trunk on the right side of the tree,

Look forward to watching this tree progress.

Re: Japanese Black Pine - initial styling
Thanks guys! Really appreciate the feedback.
Craig, I agree with your point. I'm just keeping my options open at the moment as I'm not entirely happy with the bottom right branch. Time will tell.

Great branch manipulation as they could look handlebar'ey in a different set of hands. What is the plan for the head? Lovely work.

Thanks again for the comments.
Bodhi, my plan is for a full, rounded crown. Just needs 4-5 years of development to get there.

Re: Japanese Black Pine - initial styling
Hi Scott, keeping your options open is always a good plan and excess branches will only enhance the trees trunk girth, with a relatively young tree such as yours branch development is basically in your hands so further branch refinement is only a question of time, manipulation and growing.

Hi Scott , very nicely done , if this doesn't serve as inspiration for young guns then nothing will
. It has inspired and motivated me to get out there and clean up some of my neglected stock which at this stage is 90% of it .
Cheers Alpine

Nice tree with a very bright future.
Great work on the initial styling Scott, and well done with leaving some excess on for future development and change
