anyone grow adansonia downunder?

Post by Kevin Nel »

Hi There

I tried looking in the forum but the search returned no results. Was wondering if anyone of you are growing A. gibosa as bonsai? Could you post some pics please?

Thanks.

KC, it's the boab/baob/baobab/bottle tree. I haven't heard of them being used for bonsai, but Bracychiton might be a useful search for something similar. ish.

Correct spelling is 'Gibbosa' :)

This thread has a bit of info regarding them as bonsai: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10355

And this site also has some helpful info: https://www.bottletrees.info/

I'm just waiting to get through winter before I put my seeds in the ground :)

Sorry Kevin, I have none in my personal collection, I was just going to find some example for you on the internet :)

Mine will be done the long way (via seed) so will be a few more years before I have anything to show :P

Hi,

I did try digitata ( I believe ) once, I had five seeds from New South Wales, they germinated and developed for about six months: they died fairly promptly during winter, our (Victoria, Melbourne) winter can be down to 1 degree centigrade during the nights.

( They do very well in southern Vietnam though. )

Regards.

I found with mine that as soon as there is any hint of yellowing on the leaves (the boab getting ready for dry season dormancy) I put them in a warm place and dont give them any more water till leaf tips start to appear again and swell in late December.

I have a handful of A. gregorii, A. digitata and a few species from Madagascar. I will have to post some pics.
