In the past when I have described, our trees I have quoted tree and or scrub, what is said in the books that tell us what they are. I have seen this happen with my own trees, when I thought it was dead, and did not thow it away as I believed it would shoot back.
Well in most cases they do and the old wood does survive, sometimes it rots away but leaves a very healthy new tree. This particular tree was collected with many others.
As you can see it did rot out in the middle of the trunk but has now stabilized, but it still sends up suckers, which I have in the past tried with limited success to grow on this time I let them get bigger before cutting them off.
I did forget to take pics of them, before I put them in the propagation box, which is just a small styrene box with 50/50 sharp sand and coco peat.
But here is the parent tree before and after the trim and some close up of the natural hollow. Melaleuca rhaphiophylla.

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

This is a real nice tree Pup. I think the rot gives a real natural look as you would find on the bank of a river or by a swamp. Provided it doesn't effect the health of the tree long term it is a winner. 
I love the twin trunk look, good proportion.
