You asked for it and it is now ready! [Gallery Feature]

Post by Steven »

The much talked about and requested gallery has been created and is ready for installation!

I gave Jeff (Gocny) a deadline to implement the gallery before the end of this financial year and it looks like he will meet the target :D

Unfortunately, due to the extensive work that is required, you may find that the forum will be unavailable or temporarily abnormal from 11am Tuesday 30th June 2009. We should be back up and running before 2pm the same day (hopefully much sooner). The gallery will be a work in progress and we would like your feedback and ideas on how to continually make it better. Initial, everyone will have their own gallery (accessible via your User Control Panel) as well as having a public gallery. If you have suggestions on specific galleries you would like to see please post your ideas here.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank AB.C member Daviet Nguyen who has freely lent his time and expertise to assist us with the gallery feature.

Thanks also to you for being part of AusBonsai and helping to grow the art of bonsai in Australia!

Regards,
Steven

AWESOME! Can't wait. Thanks Jeff, Daviet and all those involved to get this underway. As a programmer i know how difficult it can be to set up something as simple as an image gallery.

The only thing I can suggest at the moment is a search feature. Maybe added to advanced search if not already. So that species of tree can be easily found as well as looking at a members gallerys individually. This may lead members to other members that are interested in the same species.
Then again I think all the features that Bonsai Talk had would be awsome. There was a thread for each tree when opened and also a score out of ten could be given. But I gather the thinned skinned people would hate that. I would love to see an average of the 10 best scores for each member as well.

Thanks for all the hard work guys!
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Sweet Stephen I cannot wait ( Not that I have and decent trees to upload yet) but I will put some up ainitially.

I dunno if you are going to allow searching on the metadata ( assume you will implement the requirement in some form), but being able to search on trees is vital

Gday Steven!

I see that the gallery is up and running now - congratz to both you and Jeff!

I was just curious what sort of guidelines might be attached to the Gallery... Is it reserved solely for the display of 'finished' Bonsai, or are sticks in pots allowed too? I have more of the latter, so it is in my best interests to ask. :geek:

Thanks.

Fly.

What are everyones thoughts on this? You guy's asked for the gallery now it is up to you to decide what to do with it (within reason).

We could have separate galleries for bonsai and pre-bonsai (bonsai in training).
We could have galleries for Aussie natives and exotics with sub galleries for individual species.
We could have galleries for different styles.

Let me know what you want. My only requirements are that the pictures must be bonsai related, not breach copyright and must adhere to the rules of this board.

The gallery software is actually very powerful (thanks Daviet and Gocny) and can be customised or extended. You will notice that via your User Control Panel you can create your own personal gallery with sub-categories. This can be used to store your own pictorial history of your tree's as they progress or just your best bonsai.

It's your gallery guy's :D

Steven

Awesome and Thanks Heaps boys :-)

So long as the user provides Relevant Meta data then the serch feature will find it ( I already tried it out), and then it does not really matter how many, or what galleries are created.

I just upload several and looks like if I search on azalea, it will find any photos with that term in the metadata, Also Satsuki works too so if anyone was looking for Satsuki then the would only be shown them what they want regardless of what the gallery was that contains it.

I suppose from just browsing tree picture then a gallery listing by Native - subgallery by type might be useful.

As for what goes up, My thought are only displayable trees please unless they are an exceptional Yamadori. The Prebonsai, and Sticks in pots are for the discussion threads only

Just a thought, Can the owner of the picture take it down sometime in the future? is it posted for eternity?
Also Can the owner edit the metadata after some long time if it needs to change?

I tried the search feature WHEN I found it ;) and it seems to do the job well. I think few sub forums would be good. If you went into the native sub forum you might find a species you like or did not realise it was a native things like that.
I would stray a bit from KC in that all the trees need to be show quality. That may limit which members can use it. I would say it should be each members best trees.

Oooo,oo That is fantastic, :D thank you all involved. ;) as KP said will the pictures be easily taken down, not much point having your tree pictured for all to see if it is deceased. :? Also will the pictures be protected by theifs using them for profit use, maybe that could be considered. and i agree with KP again keep the sticks in pots for discussion threads only.
