Eucalyptus nicholii

Post by PeterH »

I was doing some photography on some trees for the NBAPC competition. Thought I'd take one of my longest surviving Eucalypt and share it.

Regards,

peter

How old Peter? It is a fantastic tree!!
I'm trying out a couple of red gums and Buxton gums from seed, do you have any tips on keeping these beauties alive?

Jason,

I started training the tree in 1995.

As far as tips . Well draining soil. I use a native mix and zeolite. Native fertilizer, plenty of water and sun. Wire shape, in its early stages. From seed it will take a while. Most of mine were advanced stock when I started. Some of the young stock I have grown in the ground for a couple of years.
Die back of branches is common.

Regards,

Peter

Thanks for that Peter,

I may have to get some advanced stock to experiment with.

What about in regards to root work?

I hope I'm not bothering you, I'm just really curious about the gums and eucolipts as bonsai.....

Thanks Pup.
Its the end of bark shedding here. Just starting to put new growth on before the cold comes back.

Hi Jason,

Roots can be tricky but i treat them the same as exotic plants (1/3rd a season) BUT I do my re-potting, root trimming from November through to late January.( Not during bark shedding ).

Flybri is a member on this site and he is more dynamic with his root pruning.

Very clever photography, Peter, it looks like a painting while losing none of its detail.
Wishing you success! :fc: :hooray:

Great looking tree :tu: So do you treat all natives with the 1/3rd root trim method Peter ? I have lost some mel linarifolia probably due to over eager root pruning :palm:

Wonderful tree. Makes me wish we had some small leafed Eucalypts to try up this way.
