Idea , Plan , Then into action

Post by alpineart »

This is another rock pot i have thought about for too long . I did a quick sketch to inspire the mind and motivate the body into action .
100_0136.jpg
After choosing some stock i decided to knock up a sketch with a little more detail
100_0135.jpg
. With my son's help a knocked up the base for the rock pot
100_0121.jpg
100_0122.jpg
and allowed a couple of days to dry
100_0123.jpg
100_0125.jpg
. This morning i decided i should do a little more and build up the top section , so i quickly carved a few area's off with the sabre saw then using off cuts i glued them back into certain area's
100_0127.jpg
to form the upper part of the rock .
100_0129.jpg
This can dry out for a couple of more days then i should be able to cut loose and carve it into shape then begin the sealing and render processes before placing the tree's into the desired pre carved pot holes .

Hi Dario , mate it was completely supervised under the watchful eye of the Wife . She loved the sketch and suggested i get out there in the sunshine and sit down , take it easy and rest . This was the result of taking it easy , and resting , good therapy if you ask me . An idle mind creates very little , lucky it lightweight concrete .

Well the leg is still attached to the body , so i have made a little progress on a few things around here . This was carved last week
100_0239.jpg
100_0238.jpg
After walking around the bugger i decided to add the base coloured cement render today
100_0272.jpg
100_0273.jpg
It has hardened off and is ready for the black tones to be added tomorrow and then sealed numerous times . I hope to have it planted out by the weekend all going well . While the quarry at Beveridge wouldn't sell me a block of red scoria , i have decide this will take on the carved scoria look .

Hi Rob-blue , mate its Hebel panel off cuts collected around building sites . You can buy it from a supplier and off cuts are available from the suppliers as well . A little more detail in the colour as i'm not quite happy with it . It will actually lighten up with age and turn to a pinkish colour and that's what i don't want .

I couldn't hold back any longer , the temps have been kind so the sealers coats dried extremely well . Did a water test numerous times and it seems to have sealed very well so i threw these in today
100_0301.jpg
100_0302.jpg
. Tomorrow i will treat them to a wee trim and detailed wire job .

Mate that is awesome. I love how you do these. It is so hard to get good quality rocks with good detail. You must have a few of these now. Great progression.

Hi kidsandall , glad to see you like it . These Monterey's/Radiata's have natural contorted yamadori trunks typical of material up here which makes them all the more unique . The top tree i have had for 15 years in every style , never really looked after it just potted and pinched out , the bottom tree was collected in Winter last year with Fiveoffive . The root mass on the bottom tree is brilliant , so i think it will fill out in a season or two and catch the old bugger in no time . The top tree has grown a mere 100mm in all the years i have had it , its been in small pots all that time , i estimate it at around 25 yo now , the lower tree would be around 5-6 yo .

Great shape on these guys Alpine.

Looks really good.
Thanks heaps for once again sharing this journey with the forum.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Hi Biocs , mate to find 2 trunks with similar features and movement has taken all of 15 years .The main tree was my first collected Monty back in 1998 and it has been neglected and survived , all the rest were nurtured and died , hence i don't have many of them . Hoping a good power feed regime will boost the new growth on the recently collected trunk , being younger it should back bud quite well and hopefully catch the older tree in no time .

Cheers Alpine.

Space unfortunately :( Kind of in between houses at the moment, so having to make do with a very small space in the yard :P

It is inspirational to see your creations though, really does make me want to get out there and try it myself!
