Dug 'saved' this guy from the inlaws place today...(last plant ended in the green waste bin and it was too late to save it

)

Haven't had any experience with these guys and not sure which direction to take it?

Any thoughts?? Shorten, chop, carve, deadwood...??

Needs to recover so there's plenty of time to contemplate the next move!

Hey kidsandall, thanks for the vert.. Yeah i have been looking at it and it needs to come down in height. Current width across trunk is about 70mm and height is about 570mm. Might chop and restart branches...IF. It back buds and survives the transplant.. Fingers crossed!

I have 5 large buxus that i dug up a few months back. Looks like you chopped it back already which is good (something i never got round to and paid the price of some major die back). Just let it grow out a season now as the exposed trunk and branches will start budding all over the place. Remove the ones you know you won't need as they develop (ie ones that project back into the tree to cross another branh or trunk etc) and by next spring you will have many new selections to work from to start getting an idea on what direction to take and have plenty of new branches forming.

Nice tree and after i collected my 5 out of the ground with thick trunks for any buxus you can buy at a nursery etc i would never look back. Now i am looking to try and hook up with some experienced diggers in th eknow to go and get me some olives! Any takers?

Just curious - are you sure it's a box ? Looks a lot like some dwarf murraya that I have collected. I would leave it alone for 12 months to recover - whatever it is.

My vote is on box, and I think Japanese Box. Its a good one that will develope nicely. Take the advice already given and give it at least a year to recover, better if it gets two years.
Buxus are typically quite slow to develope and grow so don't expect too much too soon. It has a very good nabari that will be a feature in a few years.

K2, Watto, thanks for the advice, I dont plan on doing anything for a while until it has regained full strength... hopefully it kicks on and gets some good back budding. So far have given it some root and plant starter liquid so fingers crossed.

Bougy it's definately a box, and yes will leave for some time.

I have done a vert (below)... just to get me thinking

of some possibilities ie rotation of trunk, removal of first low thick branch in the future, and some deadwood on top ??(inspired by one of the articles in focus magazine a while back)... only time will tell!!

Just an update on this one. Have been letting it grow and is nice and healthy now.
Decided to give it a trim and will grow the mid branches out to thicken them up... Matchsticks at the moment!! Also funny looking back at the virt I did... Not sure what I was thinking.....

Thinking of chopping the top and re growing. This is what I am currently thinking. Hopefully given a bit of time it will work out.

I like this virt much better. The long straight section doesn't fit very well with the rest of the tree. I almost suggested chopping the other day, but then got called away by some urgent need from one of my kids (probably something important like wiping a nose) and never got back.
