Hi Efi,
It is good to see you growing Eucalyptus in Israel.
There are over 500 Eucalypt species and many of them have similar leaves. To further complicate things many of them have different leaves as juvenile and adult. The leaves on this one look a bit like the juvenile leaves of the corymbia group. To get an accurate ID we usually need to check the type of bark and the seed pods as well as leaves. The source of your tree might give us some clues. Was it from a nursery selling for home gardens or supplying trees for farms?

?
I bought this tree, or should i say shrub, 8-10 years ago from some local nursery. u can see it in all the nurseries here. till now i didn't see a real tree (tall one) of that species here. we have in Israel a lot of Eucalyptus all over the country, i think many of the people here believes it's native one

I'm actually interesting in re potted it, but I'm afraid to harm it. do u have some instructions for me ?
Thx
Efi

Re: what is the name of this ... ?
Hi again Efi,
I have no advice regarding eucalypts as bonsai. They have been difficult for me in the past and I stopped trying many years ago. You may be surprised that eucalypts as bonsai are quite rare in Australia. I have recently tried again but would not attempt to give advice. try searching for posts by Peter H, Flybri and Pup who have had far more experience with gum trees (eucalypts) as bonsai.
I was aware that Eucalypts are commonly planted over much of Africa and the middle east but I don't know which ones are used. Blue gum is used in plantations and has become a weed in some areas. The leaves on yours look a bit like Spotted gum - E. maculata but there are others that look similar.

i think that might be because these trees change their leaves as they grow. The leaves on a bigger tree will be quite different to the juvenile leaves on your tree.till now i didn't see a real tree (tall one) of that species here.

Re: what is the name of this ... ?
Eucalypts and it realives are usually repotted during the warmer months of the year and I usually take off about 1/3 the root mass, bt others have reduced them quite a bit more.
Trimming foliage just like any other tree by cutting back to only 1 or 2 sets of leaves to promote back budding and ramification, and to reduce the size of the leaves.
I Fertilise with organic fertilisers but do so at a reduced strength as I do not like to overfeed them.

Re: what is the name of this ... ?
Actually I have no idea what variety mine are. They are all self sown from larger trees in my yard.
I do not knw how susceptible they are to Phosphorous either, but the fertiliser I use is
http://www.ausgardener.com.au/plants/Ne ... Roses.html .
It is a pelletised one with NPK of 9,4,12, that i put on the surface of the soil and then use Miracle grow as a liquid every 2 weeks.

Re: what is the name of this ... ?
Efi, Eucalypts are NOT sensitive to phosphorus. A few of our Australian plants are and it has become a generalisation to say all Aust natives are sensitive but in reality only plants from the Proteacea family have problems with P. Eucalyptus is in Myrtacea family and you should be able to use any fertiliser on this tree. The real difficulty I find is shaping a tree shape with eucs. Most branches that are horizontal or below tend to weaken and die and new shoots try to grow upward from the base of branches.

recently, I fertilized my tree twice (4 moths ago and 2 months ago), and the tree was looking really bad after that. i'm sure 100% it was the 20-20-20.
could be possible that this tree belong to "Proteacea family" , how can i check it ?

Well done for growing gum trees as bonsai in Israel. Good on ya!
I'm not an expert but to me it looks like you have eucalypt there (or a relative) not a member of the proteacea family. The most iconic tree of that family that grows in my part of australia is banksia serrata. if you google some images of its foliage or other banksia varieties (or other members of the proteacea family e.g. macadamia or grevillea) you'll know that your plant doesn't belong.
as far as species identification goes... good luck my friend.

Re: what is the name of this ... ?
Efi, The tree you posted is definitely not Proteacea. It is most likely from the eucalypt group as you first said - just can't tell which one yet.
20-20-20 would probably have killed a banksia (proteacea) in a few days.
I'm not sure what the problem could have been - too much at once? maybe another unrelated problem?
You can use low P fertiliser if you are worried. It will not make much difference but should not strictly be necessary for this tree.
