Just Potted. help with ID

Post by The Specimen »

I just repotted this tree that has been sitting in a foam box for some time

It was root bound and because it seems that I may have lost a tree recently to this,I decided to chop it all off.

On close inspection, it seems the tree was potted at least twice as I had found fly wire mesh in within the soil :o no wonder

After removing all of the roots and some look like rot, I was left with not overly too much so I hope I can give it TLC for its recovery.

.. tips and critiques please :tu2: to make this a better specimen..

QS.. I need some branches lower on the tree.. what graft method is best ?

Looks somewhat like Large-leafed Privet to me, Ligustrum lucidum. Was it found or bought or gifted to you?

Hi Hackimoto

It was bought from a nice man who was happy to let it go.

He said it doesn't seem to be growing too well so thought I may as well have a shot.

It has been producing a lot of growth and I haven't really done anything except ad some fertz.. just sheer luck I guess

Photos have been trimmed and wired to start the refining process..

So is it a privet ?

I would agree with Hack that its large leaf privet. Its not used as much as the small leaf type but is just as suitable with the leaves reducing to an incredible extent with proper treatment...

You must give me some lessons on how to trim and wire a photograph. :lost:  :?

Crush a leaf and see if it has a distinctive smell.

Not Japanese! I acquired the name from a Bonsai club member when he saw me do a drastic demo years ago.

Sakura is the Japanese name usually reserved for the flowering cherry. I think you would have to see the fruit or flower of the plum to tell what it is or be a real expert, the leaves would be similar but one is a plum and the other is a cherry. Both prunus though. Privet should have an aroma. :lost:
