Banksia growing on stock

Post by craigw60 »

I am growing the banksia much the same as the casuarina setting, up the sacrifice branches and getting the initial root work done.
This is another australian native which I reckon is well suited to mass production for bonsai.

Nice variety there craig, and I do love the Serrata :-) can you post a few other views of that one and something to scale it against please :fc:
I agree totally that banksia shoud be grown more often. They have many features that make the so well suited to bonsai in just abotu any style you want.

Hi Craig,
A great bunch of Banksia you have got there. I have several large trees growing beside me and when I recently cleaned the gutters i collected 17 seedlings ,potted them up and all are going OK. When would be the best time to do some root work on them ? As my first thought was to keep them alive.
Thanks John.

Thanks Ken, which serrata did you want to see more of the straight one or the curved ?

Craig, they are coming on nicely but unfortunately for me serrata doesn,t do that well for me here they grow but don't flourish so I won't be starting any more of them, I have over the last couple of years lost 2 big ones after a standard repot, very unsetting after years of growing. Any way much better to stick with species that flourish in your climate.

John I would not be sure in your climate but its safe to pot them here once the night temps have come up to the high teens. Do you know which species they are ?
I have never been successful with marginata, they always end up dying on me. My advice would be to get some wire on the trunks while they are really young and get the curves started right from the base of the trees.

Velvet I am sure in your climate you would be able to grow fantastic serrata
