I spent a bit of time wandering a local nursery that specialises in local provenance material http://www.treesinnewcastle.org.au/page19191/Home.aspx
I picked up a load of tubestock & a few other plants, including this gem. It was collected from a development site in the Port Stephens area. Species unknown, it is growing in its original collected soil with a complete range of the local ground cover as well as the odd weed from the nursery.

I dont plan to make many changes to its existance, keep the weeds in balance and hope that one day it flowers so I can get a positive ID. I have a really nice pot but this is not quite what the potter thought would end up in it.

Joel, I will take you up on that, the guys on duty yesterday had no idea, I liked the pot when I picked it up, more when I was given its history. They thought it could be a proteacea. It has a really fine leaf with rolled edges & silver underside, I will try & get some good clear pics in the next couple days.

Hey Hack, Its not any of the local Hakea that I recognise.

I repotted today into this beautiful Pat Kennedy pot, I kept the original sticky sand mix & added a bit of Osmocote native to the back fill. I only had to remove one heavy piece of wood from the bottom, not sure if it was stem or root but had no fine feeders below where I cut it so shouldnt have any major impact on the tree. It has a bit of black scale but a quick spray of homemade white oil will take care of that.

Definitely an ambiguous leaf.... perhaps a Persoonia like P. linearis or P. virgata? I don't think P. virgata comes this far south though. Will be interesting if it develops the nice bark of that species though! Keep us updated with flowers! I really like this sort of thing Matt.
It is going to have to wait until it flowers to finally know what it is but until then Its already one of my treasured bits in the collection and once the understory regrows I will enjoy it even more.

I have been trawling thru lists & cross referencing them & think I have found a possible match... A subspecies of Grevillea humilis, flowering will confirm when & if it does.

This tree lost a few old leaves after repotting and I started to worry until I saw lots of new buds pushing at all the tips & also some back budding. Today I have tried to bring a bit of direction to the wispy trunks...

Thats a really nice composition Matt. Only you could find such raw material. Looks great now you have added a little movement to the whole thing. My wiring is no better than yours mate(it does the job).

Thanks Steve, I use the stuff so rarely but it was the only way to make such minor adjustments, because the wire is so thin the whole lot still moves with the wind

Beautifully imaginative relationship with your natural world. Post when it flowers, please, and if you ever get an ID. Interpreting these thin-stemmed bushy shrubs as bonsai is a whole new world.
Wont have to wait much longer for a better chance at ID.
