Cypress - Worth Trying?

Post by Phoenix238 »

Hi all, my Partners Father has a large cypress (about 12 feet tall) in his front yard and I grabbed some seed pods the other week. just cracked one open and had about a hundred seeds fall all over my desk. Was wondering if it would be worth trying to propogate them? Sorry I don't have any picture of the tree, his place is an hour drive from here.

Give it a go.
From memory, I think cypress seeds like a warm water soak before their month/s in the fridge. If you have so many seeds, it might be worth researching some different recomended methods; and trying a few of them.
Cheers,
Pat

With all due respect, you are better to put your efforts into a variety that has better characteristics for bonsai like sergeants juniper or procumbens. They grow easily from cuttings. I have them strike by just shoving them in a pot of soil without root hormone.

Just clarifying, you are not referring to Swamp Cyprus, are you? I'm thinking not as a 12 ft Swampy probably wouldn't be seeding yet. Some pic's would be good.
