Melaleuca cuticularis
About 6wks ago I recieved a couple of trees from Pup, one of them was this Melaleuca cuticularis. Once it had adjusted to the east coast it was time to see what I could do with it. Bit of jute, wire & a repot. It settled into the new pot & has just had a light haircut.

Re: Melaleuca cuticularis
I could wash the pot but then the vision of a bird in this tree required it stay
I want to get a bit more movement in the trunk & right branch but will let it rest & recover a bit first. I am hoping to get some backbudding on the left branch so I can shorten it a bit... time, if only we could speed it up

Re: Melaleuca cuticularis
Craig,
When I repotted a month ago i had a very different tree in mind so its ended up on the wrong side of the pot... next time. The outside of the bend is a natural shari & i wanted to prevent breakage when bending, the add on of not allowing budding, should encourage it further up.?.
I am open to ideas so if you want to do a virt that would be

Re: Melaleuca cuticularis
How bout this?
Maybe a little less negative space between first branch & apex by way of a fuller back branch.

Re: Melaleuca cuticularis
I have not commented before Matt as I thought, that you were extremely brave. As these can be a bit touchy when cut back so hard. They will surprise you all the time though.
One I had on show in Fremantle at last years convention, spent 1 hour under a spotlight and never recovered.
We just had a shopping centre show and a larger one than this dropped a lot of foliage. It is recovering OK now. They do like water and humidity, so what you are getting must be helping it along.
Now I have to ask Skippy if his one survived.
By the way I like what you have done.
Cheers Pup

Hi Matt,
I'm no expert myself and I'm not here to judge anything that you have done, but re the wiring and comments, you shouldn't try harder for Antonio, you should want to improve for yourself and to expand your skills as a bonsai enthusiast and artist.
You said that you often use other means to achieve the same results, in my eyes bonsai is about being well rounded, learn as much as you can from as many people as you can and then practice as often as you can.
YOU WILL benefit from it long term.
Good work, keep it up and enjoy yourself with whatever you do and however you choose to do it..
Mike

Re: Melaleuca cuticularis
Pup,
Brave or foolish, the line is a fine one and I got lucky. When I read it was from the edge of waterways etc I have kept it a litle deeper in the gravel tray, IE with constant wet feet. From the 2 examples you have mentioned it would seem like a necesity, I have a small suiban that would suit it if I ever display the tree. Only one problem with keeping it so wet, the moss grows way too fast & thick.
Mike,
Bit of tongue in cheek, after this many years of applying other methods, wiring is not on the top of my improvement list, as long as it works thats all that matters to me.

Re: Melaleuca cuticularis
The wire is off & all seems to be holding ok. I want to shorten the left branch and bring it down a bit but for now she needs to fill out a bit.
Matt
I will need to remove a root to bring it to the new position, all in good time... grow baby grow Matt
