Yes I go with Thuja occidentalis Smargold
This is mine I purchased late 2010 with that ticket and kept as a pseudo bonsai in a small pot to restrict its growth.

I have notes that I made listing it further as Arborvitae and possibly 'white cedar'.
Found a bonsai example with the branches more open and it looked good, but it was small and compact.
Looks like father in law has given you a hospital pass they do not look too healthy.
You might consider cutting one right down pre-spring and seeing if it shoots.
Mine is about 40cm high.
I will repot mine (same pot) trim it (it does not mind the foliage being cut back) and open it up a bit.
