Can I air layer now? (Autumn)

Post by bonsaiarmy »

Hey all,
Last air layer 'season' (Melbourne cup weekend to Australia day weekend) I set up around 20 air layers on various tree trunks and branches (multiple species). Of these, 3 proved successful. I did however learn some valuable lessons in experience. The main one being: keep the sphagnum moist, not soaked.
With my techniques refined I would like to set up some new air layers.
Can I do them now? I know trees are going dormant for winter, but I'm thinking along the lines of: the more time the merrier for roots to develop. Also, I am impatient (haha).
Thoughts?
How did everyone else's air layers go?
Cheers

The best time to start airlayers is from the start of spring to the middle of summer when the plants are growing at their best, not coming into winter when they stop growing. Bonsai is all about UPP, Understanding, Patience and Practice.

Depends on the tree and your local conditions, but spring is best

Tell ya what bonsaiarmy, I have had a few new rooterpots sitting around for 6-7 years now (a slow revolution). If you promise to be patient and wait until springtime to set the layers, I will send you 2 rooterpots, 1 large and 1 small for you to play with. Just PM me your real name and I will post them to you care of Bonsai Northwest, and you can pick them up from your next club meeting. :D

Cheers,
Mojo
