Monster Callistemon air-layer.
Hi all,
I experimented on an established Callistemon in my garden with some air-layers over Spring/Summer, I wanted to see just how large a layer I could get to take. All of the layers took, this one was the largest (ie: in caliper) it is approx 6 inches in caliper and 60cm in height. I thought id start a progression so we can all follow this trees development. I intend to climb the donor Callistemon in winter to set some more large layers with lots of taper in the prospected trunks! The pics don't do the layer justice as far as a size comparison goes, but you get the idea.

Hi N Mac,I have been meaning to try a air layer what are the best growing mediums?
after ring barking the section to be layered, I worked some hard wood cutting hormone powder to a paste, applied it to the area to be layered, covered the lot with sphagnum moss and wrapped the lot in al-foil. Be sure to make a series of slits in the foil to allow for drainage.

I applied the layer in September, and it was removed in early Jan, so 3-4 months with this one.
