Eucalyptus Nicholii. Tips needed for the future

Post by Booga »

Hay all Euc experts or any one else that can help. :fc: I purchased this little tree last week I liked it for the fork in the trunk.
Now what to do, I know you are going to say plant it out  I will but just in a large container to keep control of the roots.
I know its far from being a bonsai but should I wire the trunk now or is it going to get a trunk chop later :lost: Im I going to grow it as it is and concentrate on
the branch structure. it is 450mm at the highest point and 15mm at the base, I want to aim for a height of around 700mm.
As you can see I have no idea where to begin.Thanks. Dave

Dave,

I am not one to give advice normally but I do have a little bit of experience with nicholii.

You could wire the trunks at this stage but looking at the age of the trunk you would only be able to put gentle bends in (Which is still good).

If it were mine I would wait till October/November to reduce the foliage by 1/2 to a 2/3rds , also reduce the roots by 1/2 and put it into a good open potting mix. This should promote some growth lower on the trunk, giving you more options.

Just a note: nicholii need full sun. Hope this helps.

Sure dose Pete, thanks mate.
I think it only needs slight bends in the trunk as I like the movement it has now, I have read through the wiki and have found that they can be re potted any time of the year so should I do that now without a root and foliage prune. :reading:

Dave,

As we are about to go into winter I would leave the potting till the warmer months unless you live in a milder climate than mine. I have found in the past that nursury Eucs need considerable work on the roots even when potting up to a larger pot.

The successful Eucs I have used in the past for Bonsai have been root pruned and repotted at least once( around October/November and as early as September) and then repotted into a training pot 14 to15 months later, around December/Janurary.
