Fraxinus augustifolia. Desert ash progress.

Post by bodhidharma »

I love it when a tree does the right thing and produces branches in the right place for you. This Ash did just this for me last year. After trying a couple of grafts, which did not work, i let the tree grow after a heavy cut back and it produced four new branches :tu: All in places where i could use them. This is a progression since 2007. Sorry but no earlier piccy's :palm:

Thanks Guys, i have found the Ash to be a very rewarding tree. Busy though, you have to keep on them. Hmm, now i think of it, that is EVERY tree :palm: Once the branches fill out on this guy though it'll be a beaut.

Hi Bohdi

Lovely looking Ash mate.

I am in the early stages of developing a F. Griffithii - flowering Ash. From looking at your tree, do you trim to the first pair of leaves in the stem structure? If so, does this help to get leaf reduction? would the Fr. G have the same growing traits as the desert Ash?

I am not ready to redue leaf size yet, as i have a telephone pole with a few branches to let grow free. I may even try to jin the top as yet.

cheers

Stewart

Hi Alpine, Yes it is rewarding watching the bark mature. I am looking forward to it extending out to the branches. This experience definitely creates a bond between you and the tree. :tu:

Hi Stewart, yes i do, i defoliate this tree once a year and periodically trim it back to the first set of leaves.I find this does keep the leaf size down. I should have let the new branches retain their foliage but it makes the tree look really unkempt :palm: You have to be really disciplined to be futuristic with your trees. I do not think there would be a large difference growing and maintaining Ash.
