Considering the huge amount of growth above th layer I was surprised th see such poor root development, time will tell if they survive.

Hi Gerard , they look healthy , but with such little roots the odds are stacked against them . For you efforts i hope they do survive .I have done numerous layers ,most with little amounts of roots failed .I should have left them on for a few more months .Yet the other side of the coin i have have calloused only layers survive .

I haven't experienced root die back on grafts being left on for an extra season , they can grow over the ring bark but my experience is to scrape the bark back off to the bare wood again and reset more wires come Winter.I combine the ring bark and wire tourniquet together giving the roots the best possible chance to grow outer most and reduce the chance of the ring bark growing over and healing . Good luck .

Cheers Alpine

Hi Gerard

When did you put the layers on? ie how long were they all wrapped up?

Cup Day, 10-11 weeks
Beech is a diificult species for a first attempt, good luck with it. Mine seem to go dormant very early and layers need vigourous growth.

Great results. Thank you for sharing your techniques and tips. I will have to give this a crack myself this year.
