A few new starters

Post by MattA »

Out & about yesterday I noticed one of the local shopping centres doing work in the carpark, tearing out loads of plants in the process. Mainly Murraya but also some lily pily & a nice big conferta juni. I could have jumped the fence but thought I would go the right way about it. So this monring I took a quick trip down to talk with the workmen.

"You want them!?!? Knock yourself out" came the reply....

I now have about 2 dozen trees soaking, will work my way thru them today, root pruning, trimming the tops & potting up, pics later. Just goes to show you can find good starters anywhere if you keep your eyes peeled.

Off to play...

Theres a shopping centre up here that resembles a Chernobyl car park, they have rows of Squamata that look to be over 20 years old. Just waiting on a reply from the council to go and remove them :)

After culling out a few that wrere not worth saving I have potted up 24 Murraya, all of them should survive with the mat of fine feeders roots they have. I also potted up 4 lilypily but they probabaly wont survive.

If you have the time and patience to deal with free plants, and the courage and manners to ask, its wonderful what you can get. I scored two carloads of mixed canna lilies last year, and a big supply of ex carpark succulents, nasty prickly things but ok for paddocks here. Most people dont think of recycling unwanted plant material, lol, its just rubbish.
If you are not killing plants, then you are not extending yourself as a gardener..
