A Mugo for the collection

Post by Jason.S »

Hi Gang,
Recently came across this little Mugo Pine at the local nursery and thought with some work, it could be a nice little addition to the collection. Haven't had a lot experience with pines yet so any advice and styling tips people can offer would be appreciated.
Its only in a standard 200mm pot now so I might repot into something larger for the next few years until it gains some size. Any one have any thoughts on a style best suited for this tree or for Mugo in general?

Hi Reddragon , its hard to suggest a style on a pine without personally looking at the tree . A quick google search will give you some idea's as you can actually see the trunk line to work with .

Hey RD

That's a bushy little mugo .. like to see it when you thin out a little .. you must have seen some interesting branching in there when you bought it ?

cheers

Yep, it sure is a bushy little Mugo but there's a lot of movement in the trunk which I liked and showed potential. It may be had to see and appreciate as you said Alpineart. Hopefully this sketch will help a little.

Hi Reddragon , tilt it over to the right about 50-60 degrees , wire the apex down another 50 odd degrees for a nice compact semi cascade . Retain 1 of the lower branches , hopefully with good ramification , wire in some movement for the new apex . Just a suggestion .

Thanks alpineart, that was the style I originally had in mind for the tree but wanted to hear some opinions.
Nice to hear my thinking was on the right track :tu:

Tilt to the left lose 1 on the low branches and keep the other short.
Shrten the trunk at a suitable branch for a new apex and have a nice shohin starter there too :-)
