Chicken pellets mate. Lots of chicken pellets!

And thanks guys for the thumb-ups. It had a lot of swelling and reverse taper when I dug it. Carving didn't solve everything but did improve the looks. I'm trying to build ramification for this guy. Being a boug, this shouldn't be too hard.

Hi kvan64 , Very nice little Bougy .What are the dimensions of the tree ? , Is Smarty pants a mini boug or a standard variety ? Brissy is the place for growth on these , mine has struggled since i purchased it from up North , just re potted it in Winter into scoria and its taken off getting some growth out of it now and a few flowers as well . Come Winter next year it will get a good carve and re-style onto a rock .I hope to make a trunk on rock combination by carving the out the base and sealing a scoria boulder into the hollowed section that died back as it looks unbalanced .

Cheers Alpineart

Hi Alpineart, Smarty pants is a standard boug variety (I could be wrong). It has very small leaves but trunk can get very huge just like Matthew said. This one is only 28cm (280mm) but I've seen on that has a diameter over half a meter in a bonsai pot. In facts, this is the only variety that has decent hardwood which don't rot easily like others in the family. These like fine sandy soil. I tried them in 5-7mm scoria but they don't seem to like it. They take roots very easily even with thick cuttings so roots over rock will be successful but make sure you use a much bigger rock as the tree will grow very fast and out grow the rock and looks funny. I'll show you a picture later to show what I mean.

Jamie, I have done extensive carving to this one. Will let it recover and develop more ramification before any more carving to be done on it :)

Tony, I used steri-prune at the time of digging and potting but didn't use anything at the time of carving. The wound heals quite well.
