The weather was a bit variable in Canberra yesterday.

I was at home and it was a lovely sunny day as I worked on repotting and trimming a Banksia.

One of our members had large hail on the south side of Canberra.

At the collection it snowed and here are the pics to prove it.

I was lucky to make it to Floriade this year and came to visit the NBPCA as well for the 2nd year in a row, such a magnificent display- as always!

But the trees looked a bit different to these photos... what happened???

Is it foam/bubbles??? If so I hope it didn't affect the trees at all.

Every spring some poplars nearby in the park put out tonnes of fluff and if the wind is going in the wrong direction we and the plants get covered in it.

Some of it we can blow off, some we pick off and some we wipe off with a wet whisk broom.

I will be glad when we move to the new site and avoid this yearly inconvenience.

So far we have had 53,500 visitors with 7 days to go.

Hi all,

well Floriade is over for the year; almost. Still a royal visit to go.

We had over 68,500 visitors this year! about 10.7% up on last years attendance.

The volunteers did a sterling job especially with a club show on the weekend as well. I can not thank them enough.

Grant, congratulations on the significant increase in attendences. Let's hope bonsai/penjing grow from strength to strength in Australia.

Well done Grant and team,
I visited the Canberra exhibition and the NBPCA during floriade, it was a fantastic show.
Just one thing, following along with Linday Farr's thread, could the Canberra/Goulburn club's or the NBPCA and friends sell bonsai starters next year at floriade? Alot of money to be made and maybe some new intrest in our hobby. I will be willing to help out to help spread our disease. I mean intrest!
What do you all think, a good idea of not?

due to the visit to Floriade on Thursday by the Queen the break down of Floriade has been delayed a week and so Commonwealth Park will be closed until monday the 7th of November.

That means that we also will be closed until the 7th of November.

So nice to see the catlin elm again, the last time I saw it it was athe the Nepean show at Penrith this year.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for mentioning the elm and alluding to its past.

It has such an interesting history and is a great bonsai as well. For those not in the know it was started about 40 years ago with the making of a fake but very realistic rock; into which cuttings were placed and the roots now go all the way to the soil level. The pot was handmade by the daughter of the artist. Apon the death of the original artist; a mrs E Wallace; it passed to Val Allen and apon her death to the current owner John.

It is one of my favorite pieces in the collection and the public love it.

No, would have been nice but it had all been worked long before we knew about it. All in all the royal couple were only in the Park for about 15 or 20 minutes.

The park has been mostly emptied now of the floriade set up but it will still be a week of tidying up before the Park can be reopened.
