hi guys,
Im wanting to dig this Acer negunda (pictured) out as it is now ready to open bud. since it is so tall and the lowest branch is 45cm from ground level and only tiny compared to the rest of the branches. The next full and large branch is 111cm from ground level and the trunck is 26cmthick. I need to know if it will be fine to cut all of the upper branches at the same time. And how will i make my cut.

I chop my acer negunda trunks hard Petra and they back bud fine so I would say chop as far down as you like and it will throw out new shoots all over.
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.
Just an update on this tree.
In April 2010 we dug this tree out and gave it the chop. I cannot find the photos
of when it was dug out or if i even took any photos ,sorry.
This picture was taken in December last year 2010. As you can see the new growth.

Hello Everone, Both my Acer Negunda, (smaller one, self sown, in the ground, about 1 meter tall, slim straight trunk, and 2nd one about 1.5 meter tall from a dig in big pot with thick nice curved trunk) are now fully leafed up but really want to cut them back. Is it too late? Also do the fairly large leaves reduce in size with trimming like the Maples and Elms? Thank you.
You can cut any trees back, even when they have full leaf.
Acer negundo is a very tough species and will be ok with cutting now. It will survive even if you cut right back to bare wood now.
The leaves will reduce a little but are usually still far to big for a really good bonsai but you will learn lots by practicing on them.
