[BODHIDHARMA]..Tanuki project.. Juniperis "sargentii"
This is a project i have been wanting to get on to for the last three years. If i can pull it off it will be spectacular. A difficult ask but, hey, isnt this what it is all about. The donor stump is a tree that i sadly killed about five years ago by going to hard and it might happen a second time A tanuki graft onto a previous Jasminum nudiflorum or Winter jasmine stump.
Height (at the moment)300mm
Species..Juniperis "sargentii"
cost..a lot of tears
The pot is a stamped japanese pot.

Bodhi have you given any thought to running it through the bottom hole on the left curving it up through the centre of the deadwood exiting the hole in the middle and styling it on the top left hand corner. Don't know if that makes sense !!

No hole Eliass, only looks like it. The trees will be grafted one each side with the head of the tree exiting on the left side.eliass wrote:Bodhi have you given any thought to running it through the bottom hole on the left curving it up through the centre of the deadwood exiting the hole in the middle and styling it on the top left hand corner. Any results yet? I really want to see this one as I would love to do something like this one day.

I started on this today and created the base of the tanuki stump. I also pruned the trees in readiness for the process. Next stage will be to route out the two channels on the side, cut the trees in half and fit them to the stump. Hopefully i will be able to wire the branching into place and see if my branching selection is correct

Im curious, will you use any sort of grafting wax, or do you strip the bark away from the side of the trunk that'll be placed in the channel of the driftwood?
My first introduction to pheonix grafting was Dan Barton's Bonsai book, and thats the technique he uses. Just curious.

Re: [BODHIDHARMA]..Tanuki project.. Juniperis "sargentii"
You split the tree in half (i use a scalpel to do this.) You then fix it into the channel you have created into the stump. As the tree grows it takes on the shape of the wood it is growing on, or in. I have done this on numerous occasions with success but have also had failures It will then become a part of the stump. This is a successful one i have created on an Elm group. the middle trunk died and i grafted into or, onto it. The tree will just grow over the screws in timeAndrew F wrote:Im curious, will you use any sort of grafting wax, or do you strip the bark away from the side of the trunk that'll be placed in the channel of the driftwood?
