How about a sincere congratulations to Kenn Andrews from The School f Bonsai on his Grand Champion tree at Castle Hill Show.
Ken's stunning privet group took all before it, and was a credit to the Privet master himself. We've come to expect such excellence from Kenn.
There were some excellent entries in most categories, but Kenn's eye for detail and immaculate preparation
was truly exceptional.
Well done Kenn.

The Sydney Royal attracts the supposedly best of the best in most subject categories.
After Kenn Andrews' success at the Castle Hill Show we talked him into entering his tree in the "Royal".
ONLY to find "noxious weeds of national significance are prohibited from being used in any exhibits at the Sydney Royal Flower and Garden section of the RAS Sydney Royal Show."

I assume that Lantana can not be exhibited either. ie the feral cultivar or the perfectly safe cultivated species.
What about the Olive tree which I understand is classified as a noxious weed in some states.
Who is to say that the Privet is not a native (now and forever more).

The debate has only just begun.

A query as to Privet elligibility has been lodged with the RAS.

Kenn is believed to be preparing an emotional address to the next full meeting of the Bonsai Society of Australia on wednesday 7th April. Don't miss it. I'll keep you informed.

This brings up the Question which raised elsewhere abour Trees bocoming Naturalized

At what point does this happen? What constitues a tree species to be naturalised?

The Sydney Royal Flower & Garden Show Schedule 2009 clearly states on page 12: "Noxious weeds of National significance are prohibited from being used in any Exhibits at the Sydney Royal Flower & Garden Show" on the same page in the very next column are the categories for Bonsai: Classes 424 — 433.

The assumption is therefore that none of these nasties must used in any floral arrangement! I think not — It can only be hoped that the judges are aware of the diversity and able to recognise the noxious species that have been declared as such in differing Australian States. I have heard my bonsai friends enthusiasm in regard to collecting the weeping willow for example. tmaster has pointed out many of us are bonsaing the non evasive hybrid lantana, but it smells and looks like a lantana.

Back to privet Ligustrum Ovalifolium I believe has not been declared noxious in Victoria! Can anybody confirm this?

Is the Grewia a noxious weed.? There are native species of that yet I have heard that it is considered noxious.
The South African variety!! maybe although if you google them they do look very much alike. Pup
The privet and Olive have not at this stage been declared noxious. I often wonder who inspects them to decide.
There was a few years ago in the good old USofA a quarantine officer that destroyed $ 30,000 worth of Maples that had been legally imported!!
Makes you wonder.

Privet is one of THE BEST bonsai material you can work on .... especially if you can dig an old "noxious weed" out of the bush, tame it in a pot and remove all the seeds . Would some horticultural organisations like us to leave the Privet in the bush?? It is used as Bonsai all over the world and there are many magnificent Privet Show Trees. Some horticultural organisations need to catch-up to the world of Bonsai as it is practiced globally!!!

G/Day! Aaron,
we had you tagged very early and hope Tassie is being good for you.
You won't guess but i'm the old guy at the back of the class when you chaps called in to The School of Bonsai for some study a couple of years back.
Ian is THAT Ian who promoted your team and put you on stage with phase 1 of your Olive Tapestry.
That's a thought! How about you tell every one about the Olive 3piece suite and with some follow up photos??
