this is a little $12.60 sargent juniper which has evolved over the past 4 years as because of what I have learnt.

very nice, I love the little shari on the trunk, i'd like to see the roots not so exposed yet, if you don't mind me saying,great little tree but

thanks Craig, don't mind at all, i like to hear the opinions of other enthusiests, but can you explain why you would like to see less roots exposed?

The tree needs no more thickening, for its preasent style and apears to be very healthy, always pushing new needles. And I can asure that pot is full of roots.

Chris, the reason i would leave them covered is that from what i can see ,the roots very small and arranged with no particular reason in mind.They just look messy! Have you been looking after them at repot time? viewtopic.php?f=7&t=9083 Roots will thicken/grow best when covered and not exposed to the air, generally we like to see a nice radial spread of roots coming from the trunk,.IMO- the roots should be one of the latter/last things exposed in a trees life.
Over the next few years you could try to give the roots some direction by arranging them where you want them and keeping soil over them, hope that explains it a little for you ,

Nice little tree. As you have invited comment I'd like to make a suggestion based on my personal tastes. I wonder if the top of the tree is not a bit heavy for the thin trunk. I have done a quick virt to remove the two lower branches and therefore the visual weight and width. Have a look and give it some thought. I think it imporves the tree, but others may have differing opinions.

Ah chris I like this! This is why I take photos of my trees from as early on as possible, because I seem to forget just what a difference has been made since the early days of a tree's life in my collection. and you've done really well shaping this one. I also like Andrew's virt, the balance of foliage with the rest of the tree's elements is tops.
