,,here is my 60 cm high, jbp which i bought from Yatla vale bonsai nursery(Adelaide) about 15 yrs ago, as bonsai stock, about $45, it already had some bark on it back then, i don't know its age exactly, looks to be seed grown,, it had more lower branching on it, once upon a time, one by one they were removed, i did not like the way they looked,long and extended,with fine branching too far out,, basically, this tree might be forced into a style i yet have not figured out yet, (thats if it survives) i bare rooted it this year(july), really shook it till no soil was left, 10 weeks earlier,(in april), i removed 75% of branches and needles,, i think i may have killed it(looking a bit yellow) ,, i have kept the tree out of the wind and have misted it 3 times a day, while still keeping it in full, windless sun, i realise now, that i may have removed too many needles, trees are solar powered and i just ripped out most of its capacity to grow,(gather light), i hope it survives.... .. ... any ideas on style would be appreciated, literati maybe ............. this tree had the same problem as my white pine, neglected, no fertilizer, bad soil, etc. its just in debco bonsai mix now, with extra zeolite, can't do anything about the mix this year,most of my pine mixes are now, 60%-70% diatomite, 20% zeolite and some debco bonsai mix, bit of coco ..... cheers...joe

Sounds like you can treat them rough. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
There pretty tough though, so just give it regular Seasol to strengthen

Definitely the makings of a nice Literati. My favourite style.

Not sure what others do down south, but I would never bare root a Pine up here. Is it normal to bare root in the southern states? It will handle the needle prune better.

I wouldn't go so far as to hose the roots off but you can take most of the mix out of a healthy JBP without to much risk, but I must stress that this is for healthy JBP. You also don't work the top when you are going to do a heavy root prune.

I would just be giving it seasol every few weeks and don't let it stay too wet.

thanks for the info,makes me feel a lot better now,i hope it survives and thrives.., i have fed seasol today,i fed all my trees for the first time.. smells like my old fishtank gravel.. phooey..... here is a close up pic .. cheers..joe

I would be tempted to give it a light organic fertilize. A large handful around the perimeter. If you have shaken the roots out that means you also shook out any nutrients it had. The new potting mix would probably only have a little Osmocote in it. The only style you could go with would be Literati and there is a whole post on that on this site.

thanks for the info, what organic fertilizer would you use, my white pine would love some too, i bought some miracle grow , in the new bucket.. have not used it on anything yet.. time to start reading the posts on literati .. thanks again for your help.....Joe
