Hi All,

I put a post up the other day asking for a tree Identification. viewtopic.php?f=134&t=8982&start=0
I think we came to the conclusion that it was a Coastal Rosemary.

This evening I have collected the tree I have been eyeing off. Not to much to say though it stands about 60-70mm with with a base trunk thickness of around 40mm. My main objecttive is to transform it to a Literati Style but I have the follwing Issues

1- I Can't find a lot of info on these tree, although I have been told they are very Hardy I just hope it can survive the transfere process.
2 - I'm not sure how well they bud back, especially on hard wood. I know they can be hedges so I'm asuming thats they must do at some point.
3- Also not sure how easy they are to style although the branched seam to harden pretty well?

It seam to have a fair few Radial roots towards the surface and I removed the Major tap root which was about 10mm thick. Just hope there is enought to kick it through. I soaked it in Seasol to loosen and remove the soil which was for about 2 hours. I then repoted with a mix of 3/5 Diatomite 1/5 Potting Mix & 1/5 Peat Moss. I then re-soaked it for about 20 mins full submurged in Seasol and then Placed in a Semi Shaded area. I have also left a water tray under it for the first few weeks to keep the Seasol up to the roots.

Deff not coastal rosemary. Looks like maybe a Baeckea sp.

elegant-----If you have a couple of clamps or trunk benders I reckon that straight section needs a bit of movement

ok not baekea either. Any scent to the leaves?

It has sort of a herbie sweet smell, nothing that I can put my finger on though.

mate, could you give us another pic close up of the foliage that is as clear as possible. in the mean time I will have another squiz at the other thread and see if I can ID for you.

Im still thinking westringia but it could be something else ofcourse.

edit - yea I am sticking with westringia, a quick google search matched foliage. there are many different forms of them. I cant narrow it down exactly but it is westringia.

these guys should bud back profusely. just be a little careful wiring as they can be somewhat brittle. if you can wire while the shoot is semi hard you should be ok. shouldnt have problems with them dieing back if wired at downward angles either, if it does employ clip and grow as branching should come out from all angles of the tree.

Cheers Jamie, I will have to keep an eye on it for the next week or two. Unfortunatly I'm off for a few weeks and I have a friend looking after them, fingers crossed on the maintenace for that one

Its definitly smaller finer leaves than the Fruticosa But does look simliar?

these things are tough I wouldnt stress, aslong as it gets some water in that time it will be fine. hopefully your mate will water for you, anything is better than nothing anyways. I asked the mother in law to look after my trees and said as long as they get some water they will be fine, she didnt water at all and man was I jacked!

I agree with Guy that the Middle section needs a bit of a bend of some sort, but unfortunitly I'm not sure if this will be possible. The branches seem to be extreamly hard and brittle so I think bending is going to dificult
