I'm not sure whats wrong with this but am not happy with the overall look.It could also be that this style doesn't suit buxus and am on the wrong track --and id species if possible thanks--I'm thinking that the foliage could be too far from the trunk or I need to jin the bottom 4 branches(to give the impression of height)--or jin the apex and reduce the length of all branches or something along those lines--any ideas are welcome--its about 350mm from the rim of the pot

Yes, it does need something doesnt it? Probably a Japanese box and maybe consider reducing its height for the time being. Take it of at the second branch maybe to create a new leader and force some back budding for some more branch selection. It doesnt work as a formal upright .

I think it is the wrong style for the tree. A buxus by its very growth habit is lush and full and it would not grow this way. The bare branches and full foliage pads are contradictory. Also, jins don't work for this style. You have wonderfully complex bark and a jin doesn't sit well with it. In nature a dead branch would pretty quickly be covered by new shoots/branchlets/branches so you are working against the tree's nature. My suggestion would be to put it in the ground and let it grow and develop for several years and then see how you can restyle it.
