Hi there crazy kids!!

Justed wanted some help on the following: When is the right time to root prune and re-pot the follwing species in Sydney pls:

Juniperus Procumbens, Swamp Cypress and Azalea

Hi,
For flowering Evergreen trees such as Azaleas you should re pot after flowering and probably best to trim after they flower as well.

For All Evergreen Trees you re pot in late winter to mid spring or another option is early to mid autumn.

For deciduous Trees repotting is best done in winter just before the buds swell.

This is my understanding.

Yes that is true: "In winter time or ideally just before the buds swell."

Down here(and at home) we have an order in which we will repot our deciduous trees. Obvioulsy if it looks like it is going to pop we will repot depending on individual circustances. The tridents seem the most active earliest and the Zelkova and Beech are the last into leaf.

Trident Maples and Ash
Elms
Japanese Maples
Larch and taxodium Distichum(Swamp Cupress
Beech,Hornbeam, Zelkova and Taxodium distichum var Mexicanum(Montezuma Cypress)

Ok I just read a large in depth write up all about bud swell and when to repot . It said the best time to repot deciduous trees is when buds extend . When temperures rise the tree starts to awake from dormancy the buds swell then they start to extend before opening and leafing out . Roots pruned before buds swell will remove energy . ! Got this info of bonsai 4 me .

Makes sense in the very cold northern hemisphere but may not be 100% correct with our/your conditions.

BrisVegas is different to Sydney to melbourne to Canberra.

Oh yea it also says when the leaves have opened it's too late and will have to wait until next year . To repot. So now I'm confused. Does timing not matter as much because of the temperate climate of Sydney ?

The shorter the growing season and the more intense the winter; the more the need for perfect timing of root pruning with some species.

Conversely the longer the growing season and the milder the winter the more latitude you have a to when to pot and repot trees.

Peter Adams just said he had a growing season last year of just 5 weeks. (North of Seattle near the canadian border)
