Here is my Juni that I recently bought..



All ideas on what to do with it, and when are welcome

While here I might confess to buying 2 other bonsai's as well... but that's for another thread

It looks Very small? and we cannot see any trunk or shape so advice a bit hard

If it were my tree? The best thing to do with this little guy would be to put it in the ground or a grow box for 2 or 3 years, then you should have something pretty substantial to begin with. A decent trunk and plenty of branches to wire.

I think that juniper is not a juniper but a podocarpus.

Yes Ken it is quite small, seems like I've done it backwards. I should have joined here 1st and then gone out and found the tree ....not to worry, onward and upwards

Siddhar, I am thinking the same, as I said to Ken it is small. So it will be my ongoing project

I would recommend a visit to a Bonsai Nursery. Yes, these nurseries exist for profit, but most owners are also very happy to give some advice and have stock developed that is often more suitable for Bonsai.
It also allows you to look at examples of developed Bonsai.

You might also like to join a club.
Just be careful as it becomes an obsession and soon your yard will be full of trees.
Not a bad obsession.

Hi Michael,
I visited a Bonsai Nursery yesterday on the Northside of Brisbane, and had a look round, the lady I spoke to (Tess) was very very helpful and I'm going to sighn up for one of her beginner courses later on in the year

As I type this I am waiting on a reply about joining a club, so I am slowly getting things sorted

I never get addicted to anything....the fact that I spent today going round garden centers looking at trees and shrubs....

this tree needs a lot of time...

2-3 years wont prodduce much size, it will need to be shohin if you want a tree in that time..

I dont think its podocarpus either... i reckon its a juniper procumbens or similar needle type juni

A very young Squamata Juniper in my opinion.

Tess is great and will give you good advise and teach you well. Both clubs in Brisbane will also be very helpful and you are welcome as a visitor at any meetings.

Hey there,

I had a little juniper like this too! I trained it downward with some wire into a mini cascade and put it into a small cascade bonsai pot- looks very cute now and can be shown as either a soei (accent plant) or as a mini due to its size. I'll post a few pics of it here when I can figure out how to do it. Despite its small size give something a go, you may be surprised at what you can create! (And maybe purchase something a bit bigger to work on at the same time if you want to.)
