On the weekend at the School of Bonsai Ideas Summit Peter Adams talked about the great benifits of feeding via the leaves by watering in a fertiliser such as Miracle Grow (except for pines as he suggested that during heat this will promote a fungus within the needles). He was quite adament that this would promote much more growth and development than just root fertilising.

Many will concur with Peter of the benefits of Foliar feeding. I think that it has been mentioned several time by Pup, Ash and probably others too that aour natives will benefit from weekly foliar feeding with miracle grow as well
Also check out this page in our Wiki for Foliar Fert info

I have found foliar feeding to be very successful but you need to be working hard on the foliage at the same time or the leaves will get very big and lush. Its also something you need to do regularly to get results the odd feed every now and then won't make much difference.

I had perasonal experiance with this recently
I Have not really fetalised for more then a month due to the time of year.
I put a few drops of compact fertiliser in my spray bottle and have been useing that on my trees dayly for about a week.
My figs started sprouting new leaves within days, and My cleros had new light green leaves in 1 day, in about 2 weeks i have seen them grow branchs about 3 cms or more in the middle of winter.

I have always thought foliar feeding was very legitimate. Sure there may some reasons/situations that make it non productive but to me it is definitely a worthwhile tool to have in your belt with bonsai.
