When I first looked at it I saw two reasonable possibilities. But the more I look at it, the more I only see one.
My "other" possible was remove the first branch and bring one down from above as a first branch and wire the tio with some good movement and placement.
And the other, and only one I like upon further thought, is to leave the first branch and rmove the rest
Make a nice, compact tree using the first branch as the leader/trunk!!

I would give it a good home

It would make a nice compact tree, however i have to disagree. i love the movement in that trunk too much to just chop the rest. Personally im not fond of the rock either; would it be possible to take it off the rock and just have it as a slanting in a crescent pot? In that case it also really needs branches on those two leftward bends. If you were to go that way you'd have to get rid of the first branch though.

missy, I thought something similar at first. Remove the first right branch. I see a shoot/devloping branch above it that could be wired down for a first branch. And I like the movement too. But I just don't feel it has sufficient left hand branching to pull it off.

this is a great little bit of stock!! would love to get my hands on it!

to me it looks like the first little branch has been put there for a reason, to use as the future tree, yes the trunk has got some nice movement in it and could definately make a good tree, but the first branch is perfect to build the tree as it is placed beautifully for it to build the canopy structure. if this was mine, I would use that first branch as the start of the new tree and use the rest of the tree to create a jin, not a huge jin either as the tree will be quite compact with that first branch. if you didnt want to waste the rest of the tree air layer it and get two, make a jin stub and rebuild the tree from that first branch, the tree and rock works very well together and should not be split, it takes a long time to get roots to "graft" to the rock like that and would be a shame to waste it!

using that small first branch will in the long run make for a much nicer tree, it will incue a lot more taper and give the tree a more natural feel.

I think I will have to virt my thoughts here to as words arent describing things well.

One of the major points of discussion was,
Should the foliage mass move away from the rock or back towards the rock.

I think there needs to be a reason that the tree has been able to stay on that rock. I think that to make it believable, the foliage needs to be a bit heavier on the rock side, or very very sparse if heading away from the rock in a windblown manner.

Hmmm, wasthis the front used?

If so I think the trunk was wrapped in raffia and bent and twisted down to cascade beside the rock. The little branch them becoming an apex and the rest of the foliage was used to create a semi cascade?

Gerard, what the point to this , will you be showing the original tree after styling.

Chop, wire, then let it run free with fert...rinse, repeat!

I'd give it ~5 years to be at a good showable level, and find a nice old pot.
