Olive Tree Bare Rooted ??

Hi everyone!

This is my first post and may I say the simple pleasures from admiring living wonders are just that.. simple pleasures (I love this in the morning with my coffee and cigarette)

Well I just purchased an olive tree with a trunk of 15cm across though I have seen much more interesting ones here on the site

I plan to flat cut it just below the surface base at its widest point.. my question is..

Now being with Winter just getting going.. would this be the best time for such an operation or should I wait closer to Spring ??

Also any other tips to help this specimen survive would be greatly appreciated..

Thank you in advance and I hope to contribute to this art from and leisure as much as possible

After all it is passion!

Cheers

The Specimen

Hi, I find you can do just about anything to an Olive at any time of the year, they're one of the hardiest plants you can find, when flat cutting sometimes its not always wise to cut at the widest point, I used to do this but realised that sometimes they were out of proportion with too much base and not enough trunk so keep that in mind also.

Hey Ozzy
When you do flat cut one, What do you pot it up in? just the Average mix and leave it on the bench or some special rooting mix and into a humid box?

I normally just throw them into whatever I've got laying around, usually cheap potting mix, I have also been trying coir lately, the stuff you get in a block and add water to, sometimes I use that 100%, other times mixed with gravel, everything seems to work OK, just have to make sure whatever you use to keep it moist, after all they are a cutting, once potted I just leave them on the bench, they don't like the hot Sun so afternoon shade is good until they've got some growth.

Thanks guys.. really appreciate the wonderful insights and advice.

I will be transporting it next week though to make it easier, should I chop the branches off or should I leave it for with foliage n all ?

Ozzy have you flat cut it during this time of year and is it no difference to doing it in spring or does spring give it more chance of survival?

I will post before and after pics.
