I have not tried this but i have seen a olive grove where there is a row of branches sticking out of blue barrels that seem to be fine :)

Hey Goff

Do you mean flat cutting a large branch for a cutting???

You flat cut the olive to reduce the volume and as it is a tubar it grows roots from the edges no worries. Only certain species will do this from a large cutting.

Have tried this a couple of times without success, haven't bothered much with it really as its a pointless exercise when you can just cut one at ground level and get a real tapered trunk and gnarly base that craps on any branch cutting you can get.
