I planted this tree in the ground 7 years ago thinking it was swamp cypress I found it in a bargain bin untagged
after the first year it stayed evergreen and i became suspicious
went to a couple of nurseries and they informed me it was a californian redwood
any way its has to go before it becomes a problem what better place than a pot
dug a trench and under cut the roots best i could and back filled with sharp sand ,will leave in the ground for a year then pot it up next spring
then carve the bejimminees out of it
gunna have to learn how to get creative with a die grinder

Wow, there's a project to get your teeth into. Can't wait to see what you come up with there.

Looks more like a Metasequoia, the Chinese cousin to the Californian Redwood.

Hi Rawhide , mate if its an evergreen its a Coast Redwood - Sequoia Sempervirens . The foliage is quite harsh compared to the Dawn Redwood and Swamp Cypress . I had numerous tree's but they can die back for numerous reasons after being placed into bonsai containers . Good luck with your plans for this one .
Cheers Alpineart

Metaseqoia is deciduous too Craig so not likely to be that one.
