Hi all,

I have posted this tree for advice before. I decided to attempt a windswept design with the banches I had to work with. I am hoping that with further growth and ramification over the years, that I will be able to achieve some nice foliage pads in the areas I have created.
Comments and criticisms most welcome.

Hi Matt I presume the first photo is the after ? I do like it - love the roots and the foliage pads suit the tree's style.

Matt - just my humble opinion, but I think you are heading in the right direction. Well done.

they7 have to be kept under control but are easy to shape with wire

What about the lowest branch going to the left? I would remove that one as it goes the wrong way

I agree with Ken, the low branch moving to the left, goes against the flow of the windswept concept and could be removed.

I also think the other small branch, coming off the uppermost branch (good use of the english language Dave), should be raised, only slightly though. As it is moving in a more downward motion at the moment, it doesnt have the perception of the wind howling it into a position. The counter argument against that is to be careful not to make it too straight, still need some movement.
Just a thought.

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments. Ken and Dave- I placed that lower branch where it is to "fill a gap". I'm wondering if i could bend the branch around 180 degrees so it still fills the gap but the foliage pad faces the same direction as all of the others? I agree that the other branch towards the top needs to be raised slightly so I'll have a look at this afternoon.

You also have to remember that gaps aren't always gaps, they can be 'negative space' which is actually a positive thing and can add alot to the design.

I can see what you mean by trying to fill the gap with the lowest branch. But as Neal has pointed out, a gap or negative area can add to the design. That lower branch goes against the flow of the rest of the tree and if removed will open that lower middle section between nebari and trunk.

Im also leaning toward getting rid of the other little branch altogether aswell. Open up that space a touch. Or maybe bend the branch in behind the top one, give it a little more depth, but not sure entirely how that would look. You need to try and imagine what happens when that little branch elongates and thickens up - may get a little crowded in the area.

Still really like what you have done though

Looks good dude. I think that lower left branch needs to go as well though.
I wouldn't worry about wiring it at all.

In response to all of your comments about the lower branch in the "gap", I have wired it and moved it to a back branch poition. I have also moved some of the other branches slightly aswell. I am happy to cut the bottom branch off but just thought I'd see what it looks like wired out the gap first.

Nice!! I like what you have done now. the design is open and uncluttered and the two offending branches now give extra depth. When you compare it to the first pic it looks much better i think. Well done
