I'll start by saying that I'm not a member of MPBS, however noticed that Mornington Peninsula Bonsai Society (VIC) is having their annual Bonsai Exhibition this weekend. I'll be passing through that way and thought I'd give it a look. for anyone else interested I found more info at http://home.vicnet.net.au/~bonsaisp/exhibition.htm which states:

Saturday April 23rd, Sunday April 24th.
EASTER SATURDAY 9.00 am to 5.00 pm
EASTER SUNDAY 10.00 am to 4.00 pm
ADMISSION:-
Adults - $5.00
Pensioners/Students/Children - $4.00
Children 12 and under free when accompanied by an Adult.

I hope so. I wish I had taken a photo of a large Agonis Flexuosa that was there, given I have one in development. With a 5yo old in tow, she was more interested in the awesome play equip outside than "boooring trees daddy", swishy school! Really good range of stock for sale too. Picked up a 70's book that listed Eucalytps under "Some that don't work", don't tell Fly!

I'm not a member either but had a look and saw some nice trees.Good to see some Australian natives too! I will attach some photo's. More photos will be shown in the next Bonsai Bitz, The newsletter of Bonsai The Imagination Tree. Email me for a copy. ( chris.sirre@sashieda.com.au) The new location is excellent for set up and display but maybe a little bit hidden for the general public. It's great to see trees at all levels as it is a hobby we all can enjoy. It would be very interesting to see the trees develop over the years so keep bring them back at the next shows!
The Mornington Peninsula Bonsai Society is having a nursery trip and will visit Bonsai The Imagination Tree next week (Sunday). So if you are a member join in and come along.

Hi Guys visited the exhibition today (sunday) great setup/facilities, and some very nice bonsai... congrats everyone at MPBS

Can anyone explain how "Chinese Elm 1" gets autumn colour - never seen this from a chinese elm? is it possibly a different cultivar? or just feeding regime?

Hi Ryan,

It was pointed out to me as well that one of the elms had nice autumn colour. As you might have noticed the colour of the bark is different as well. I do have some elms in the nursery that clour up like that too. A lot of chinese elms are grown from seed and that's where the variation came from. As far as I know this "variety" hasn't been named.
About the last picture that's not a dutch box. It's Buxus harlandii, Harland Box. These Buxus have a great corky bark and they do that from a young age.

Thanks Chris that's very interesting about the elms might have to venture up your way and have a look as for the buxus i could only go by the exhibitors sign (see bottom right of pic) but I'll trust your experienced eye any day the bark is very interesting having even finer "wrinkles" than a lot of the corky bark elms and oaks that I've seen around (could just be it's age ) - quite unique
