Collected my first tree-fig, need advice

Hi,

I'm new here (& to bonsai), my parents live at tweed heads and last year my mother spotted this little fig growing out of a boulder in a garden while doing her morning walk, yesterday mum noticed that they had started clearing out the garden to re-model it and asked if she could take the tree... They said yes.

The tree was growing out of a groove in the rock, the trunk at almost a 90• angle with a few little roots sitting on the rock and then the long root/branch down the bottom which and grown down the side of the rock and between another rock ( hope the makes sence).

It was cut as far down as possible to the rock(it was unable to be removed any deeper than that)

My questions are-
What should I do from here, I.e feeding & initial potting/placement in the pot and how much sun/food/water..... Prettymuch as much advice as possible. (or link me to a thread if it's already been covered)

Should I just get it in a larger pot 'as is' and let it grow more roots before I stick it in s bonsai pot? I was wondering if I'd be able to eventually get it sitting ontop of a rock with the main root and smaller roots going into the dirt.

I have it loosely wrapped in wet paper towel and am going to be back in Brisbane in 2.5 hours and would like to start sorting it out... Or am I aiming too high?

Hi Andrew
Welcome ! Just pop it into an ordinary pot with some free draining mix (diatomite if you have some). Give it a dose of seasol or superthrive and keep it in part shade maybe morning sun. Grow it on for a bit and then worry about styling. Always love free trees and have a fair few figs I have collected at work. Good luck

Cool, thanks for the info.

Would you apply root growing powder or just leave?, would you suggest leaving it in a bigger pot for say 1-2 years before you re-pot it.

If there are any torn areas on the roots cut then cleanly to promote rooting. You can put some powder on if you want - can't hurt. Figs want to live so I don't usually bother with any I have collected and they all live. Leave in in a big pot or better still a grow box until it is at the trunk girth you want. Once it goes into a bonsai pot the growth slows dramatically. Enjoy.
