They have a group planting contest over at Wee Trees Bonsai Talk. I love to participate but being the wrong time of year for that sought of thing here I thought a little outside the square and copied an idea of Dan Barton who said some times bonsai should just be for fun and created a hedge Bonsai.
A few Dwarf honeysuckle I had laying around and a pot I made a few years ago. After some trimming and potting I got this. It sure was alot of fun

Dan, has one in his book. Which as a hedge is now defunct, but he did another one, where the sty or steps were, he replaced it with a maple.
I will look though my pics and see if I can find it.

Oh Bretts! You seen the Hobbit grove hedge on weetrees? I'll see if I can find it. Perfect example!!

Can wait to see how this turns out, already looks great!


Edit- Actually I think I am confused... I think I inventing a setting that didn't exist, which was a hobbit grove and a hedge, I know believe they were two different settings..

is this the one of Bilbos home you were thinking of?

I didn't know Dan's original hedge is gone. I have a picture of it here I can upload later. I remember that Hedge too Psymo but I could not remember if it was Dans. I was thinking I might add a fence or something later on but at the moment I am just heading to a rectangle hedge with the bases showing. Dans does not have the base showing which I thought was a pity.

Oh I haven't worked much at all with this species so I can only hope they take the root trimming and disturbance this time of year. I know they do make great bonsai though and have a little hedge of them around the veggie garden.

Bretts, I like your idea too of adding the gate, but it looks good as a stand alone piece.The rectangle hedge, It's like the a westen equivalent to some chinese style landscape. Though I imagine it would be difficult after a while not to ending up with some type of topiary looking thing.

Peter Chan at his Herons nursery in Wire Mill Lane had a hawthorn hedge in a pot that was spectacular. The trees were styled and then the trunks cut and split and woven in true country hedgerow tradition. I have a slide of it in the downstairs store room, somewhere. It was a few years ago but plan to look for it when I visit in June. When you visit also the have pint in the pub at the end of the lane.
