With dwarf umbrellas you can cut them back to develop more branching, they also love a loose mix, this enables the roots to expand and thicken. I have a group fixed to a rock, their roots hanging down, no soil, just a little spagnum; sitting in a tray of water, They are developing masses of roots, aerial roots and new growth, looks quite effective.

Chop them back and use the cluster of stems to form a nice grove. I attach a very young planting on a rock.

Thank you for your suggestions i think i might bind the thicker branches together and try root over rock.

I'd be interested in one of these as well.
Does anyone know if you can take all the leaves off one, or if you have to do it one section at a time to cut it back?
Thanks

Thanks for that, I just bought mine and it's not amazingly healthy so I might wait until next summer. I assume that it is the kind of thing you would want to do early to mid summer?

You can let it grow aerial roots to make a banyan style tree. This is mine 3 years ago; it has a lot more aerials now. It was growing without pot on a big saucer in the yard of a Sydney group house when I got it. So, a bonsai pot and soil really spoiled it!
