Pup and I worked on this one here

This gave us lots of options for it's future. I hope he likes the direction I have chosen

I was using this tree from IBc as inspiration.

These trees are loving my growing conditions/environment so it should develop pretty quickly from here

I think you have chosen well. As I said at the time after I had looked at it I hoped it would survive, as it is the one tree I seem to kill just by looking at them.
I have been given established ones, and worked on them slowly slowly, root reduction slowly slowly, from growing pot, to bonsai pot dead within a week
I think being a young man you have the time to work on this one. To be one of the classic Cotoneasters.
Brett a question, will you still be trying to get here for the Seminar in May?
Cheers

I am glad you approve Pup. You have me worried when you talk about killing them. I was thinking we are only chopping it back surely you can't kill it from that
I put this in semi shade this afternoon after the work as it was hot and did not want to burn the trunk or fresh leaves. Now I have to get it back in the full sun agian gradually.
Latest plan was to head back over in March so the kids can enjoy the beach and I was silly enough to think that is when the Convention was on
Very up in the air if I will be there in May

So I now have to put your one on the no sale list

This guy survived the root reduction to make room on my bench without a beat missed. Looking forward to working with it this year.

Thanks Minhi, This was due for a little attention today.
I am pretty unsure on the correct technique for advancing this species. I think I could speed things along by not reducing all shoots but getting a little organisation to the growth is not the worst I could do

Sweet Brett!
Sure has come a long way and is starting to look the part
Will you be carving the top of the trunk to induce taper at some stage?
Cheers, Dario.

Hi Dario
Yes, there is a fiar bit of carving yet to do. I should probably get stuck into the top now so it can start to roll back over. I almost did yesterday but decided to leave as I was in a hurry mood

There are lots of these around but finding one worth collecting is a little harder.

Not yet, at the moment I have been wondering if I should give it another trim but I think it may be best to let the branches just fatten up for Winter.

The carving list is getting longer and I am feeling a bit out of practice.

I have one of these that was carved a few years ago and I now think that the sooner you start the carving process the better off you are. It allows a suitable time for refinement of the carved area and also time for the wood to get a natural look. Another point to consider is that this wood, when dry, becomes very hard and as such is more difficult to carve.
