So I know people have imported larger trees before, but I think what im wishing for is impossible lol but hey, it's worth asking I suppose..

I want to import this little mame firethorn:

I love mames and fell in love with this tree, but if I read properly mames can dry out within a day so the average 10 day postage time would probably kill it anyway, right? (customs issue aside, waiting to hear back from them, if not for this tree just for reference)
I know this extremely wishful thinking, but you never know!!

Has anyone purchased a tree from the US before?

Ive tried they sent a JBP from the USA from Ebay and i got a letter from customs saying it was destroyed

Why not buy a firethorn locally ? You can't import a big variety ot trees - no pines as Chris mentioned. Figs can be imported but they have to be treated and spend a long time in quarantine. A lot of tress die and the whole process is horrendously expensive. I am not sure that Firethorns would be allowed as they may be a declared weed.

By the time it has been inspected, then spends at least 4 months in Quarantine, been sprayed with methyl bromide.
If it is allowed in, it will have cost something like $400-00 plus its purchase price, with no guarantee it will survive for you to pick up from quarantine.
They do not deliver.

You can check with your state for there regulations as well as Australia's, by going on line to the relevant Authorities.

Pup is right.All trees coming into his country have to be quantined one way or another unless it has spent time in an australian approved quaratined facility overseas which are few and far between . The cost of all the procedures of requirements is the same in aus regardless of the size of the tree. The only thing that maybe cheaper was your airfreight cost to get it here and how much room it takes up in the quarantine facitily (based on square metre of bench space). If you were going to import i would buy something decent as it it would cost what $30 for the tree and $400 min for treatment. Methyl bromide is nasty stuff and some trees will die from it. sending trees into aus via post without the appropiate paerwork (post sanatery certificates) will only get the tree destroyed on the spot, they dont muck around if the relevent paperwork isent there or its a prohibited species you have no chance, all parcels are screened and custom and quarantine dogs run over them.If you end up wanting to inport something let me know ill ran you through the details but be prepared it isent a cheap practice and there are no guarantees your tree wont be either , destroyed( due to a bug, infection , soil or inadequate paperwork) , die either in quarantine or due to methyl bromide treatment which is compulsary for almost all species.

I would be almost certain you would not be allowed to import firethorn as most fruiting species are banned. If you want to import trees trident maples are the best bet they seem to cope with the gassing easily and only require 3 months quarantine. There are quite a lot of imported tridents in Vic. I have one which was imported in the early 90s and I bought it last year.

I cannot see why you would bother. As Bougy said, you can buy them here. I have red and orange berry Pyracantha's as Bonsai. Cotoneasters also have red Berry's and make fine Mame sized Bonsai

If you want a firethorn, next time your this way we can get one from the side if the road, as big as you like. Or small.
