I have been growing this elm in a grow box for a few years, roots have been poor and there is not much live bark.
Originally I hoped to produce a raft but failed to produce new roots so I decided to stand it up slightly and remove a couple of extra trunks which were long straight and ugly. The main trunk is completely hollowed out

Hi Gerard, great start beautiful old trunk. You need to be very careful to put plenty of movement into the new leader so it blends with the curves in the old part of the trunk.

I agree on the leader. It should be pulled down to follow the trunk line. This would be a great root over rock project. An old Elm sitting on top of the mountain type thing.

The decusion in which front to use is a tough one, I know that much of the deadwood will disintegrate quickly forcing regular
redesigns, I agree that the movement needs to continue in the same direction as the trunk, I have a guy wire tied and plan to tighten it gradually. I am reluctant to bend too hard as I fear breaking the only live vein.
