Gday Everyone,
I thought I might post some pics of a big olive I have been working on recently I have just finished trimming all the new growth and wiring some of the branches, its starting to look good I think.
I am still wondering how I am going to go about carving some deadwood around the chainsaw marks and a few other old branches.

Anyway here are the pics

comments queries are all welcome

Nice bark and taper, looks like you may be going for the horizontal bar branch look though with those wired branches, forget about using all that growth for your branches and instead wire them downwards even further then once they've got a bit of meat on them cut right back to the first or second shoot on the branch, you will get way better looking branches with lots of serious movement, just like a real tree ;)

Heres a pic to explain what I mean ...

And a picture ...

The dotted line shows the original path of the branch if left untrimmed, also you can see the difference between the cut back branch and the un trimmed branch in the background, wire down hard though as the next stage of the branch will be going up and you don't want it to end up going past the horizontal, best to keep it below.

Nice stock  Ozzy's right, that is the best way to develop good branching. Do it on all my elms.

Nice Olive Archie

That bark is fantastic. Good to get one with that development instead of the smooth stuff that is so common.

Great advice from Ozzie on the branches. Follow his lead.

Re the carving. First let the top branch grow unhindered to fatten up and creat a little better taper and sap strength to ensure its survival when you carve. You can start to do some know, but I wouldn't get too close or remove bark under it at this stage. You have a nice piece of natural shari on the trunk, and you could link up the top with this if you want. I would leave the top as a jaggered jin and run the carving down and across the trunk a little to that natural shari and remove the litle trunk on the right. Rotating the front a little to the left would pick up the carving nicely.

Best Regards

Tony

Hi Guys,
I really appreciate the input, I am going to re-wire this today as ozzy mentioned in his photographs then let it grow out and see if I cant get any of that wonderful branching happening.

I will post some more pics this arvo when I have finished the work.

Thanks again everyone

Archie
