Hi, just wondering what soil mix to use for a grow box and large pots. Would i use a premium potting mix or do you start using a bonsai mix. I plan on potting cottoneaster, chinese elm & juniper. They are all in bonsai pots now so i'm not sure if i keep growing them in a bonsai mix or to use a good potting mix, because of the amount of soil i need potting mix is the cheaper option. I know the mix will need to have good drainage and i plan on re potting plants without disturbing any roots, just straight out and into new containers. All plants are healthy, just skinny.

Potting mix is fine in grow boxes. I use a bulk commercial potting mix for all my grow on trees. Also use it for larger bonsai pots but sieve out fines for smaller pots. There is actually very little difference between bonsai mix and a good potting mix anyway.

A very wise lady (was going to say Old, but she probably wouldn't like that) once told me to grow all my plants on in the soil mix I indended to train them in. Hence I have always used my Bonsai mix in my Grow Box's. It seems the trees suffer far less stress if they are planted on in the same mix they grew up in.

I put my Diatomite /Zeolite in all my grow boxes

Whatever you are used to using is my call, the same as you bonsai mix is good

I was just about to post the same question (for ficus and privet in my case) when I saw your post.
Ken, can you discribe your mix please? Would it be suitable for the plants I'm thinking to pot?
