yeah peakhurst sounds better than dural where abouts is it a nursery?
and yeah jus got some advice from a nursery that told me a few things
a) the woman at BUNNINGS that was the bonsai specialist who advised me to get the pot n peat made by amgrow was WRONG!!
and i should have got the Bonsai premixed also by amgrow
b)zeolite is goood but crushed gravel is better
can anyone confirm this?
it was a bonsai nursery i spoke to so i think they would know a bit about it but yeah im a little off putting this into practis so yeah doesnt hurt to ask around
thanks to any 1 that replys

Zeolite is better than crushed gravel, because it holds more water, and particularly because its ability to hold nutrients against leaching. As for bonsai mix, pot and peat is deadly, and the amgrow bonsai mix isnt much better unless you sieve ALL the fine particles out. That makes it expensive as there is a lot of waste. You are better off making your own. One mix that does well in Sydney is "Kens Mix". It consists of 1/3rd zeolite, to 2/3 diatomite.

Well that is complete rubbish! There is no such thing as a "bonsai specialist" in Buzzings.

What did they do, take a little training coarse on bonsai or something?

OK well im slowlly learning a few things thanks to the great members on this site
so im taking back the pot n peat and im going to get the BLACK LABEL BONSAI MIX by amgrow then add some crushed gravel or zeolite i havent decided, spose whatever is cost effective as the trees im repotting atm are jus figs but the advice i got about the gravel was in refference to repotting my juniper or liquid amber treees later on
thanks again any help is good

Bonkers,
If you can make that trip out to Ray Nesci's at Dural to get his mix, it's worth it (at least for beginners). It's got zeolite already mixed in, never clogs up and the water flows through it beautifully. My first ever repots managed to survive their first year in it.
I'm going to stick with it until I'm more experienced to make my own mixes.

Thanks ron .. but dural for me is a bit far as i live in innercity sydney, but yeah i found a bonsai mix at B********* that contains zeolite made by BONSAI ENVIROMENT for
$8 for 6 litres and decided to go with that. It should suffice for my figs and when i decide to repott anything else i might try my own mix i dont know

If you've got a car this is why it's worth the trip to the bonsai nurseries: Kingston charges $14 for a 30 litre bag of that stuff at his Bonsai Environment at Vineyard (in the Windsor area).

I Recommend going to bot Ray nesci and Bonsai environment
Take a day and do both and you will not be dissapointed
As has been said. Rays soil mix is great if you want to use soils and I knwo many people that use it only and others put some extra zeolite in it too.
rays Bags of mix ( 15 L) cost I think $12 so is chaep too.
Zeolite he sells in 25 - 30 L bags for $18.
Do not know the prices of soil at Rivo tho sorry.

That's 15"-20" from Bonsai Environment to Nesci's if that wasn't clear.
