Picked up this shimpaku juniper today at a closing down sale. $35, not bad i thought.

Gave it a trim and cleaned out the crap, the tree was a little worse for ware, i dont think it had been cared for very well.

So this is what im left with, i will wait until later to repot and see whats going on under the soil, but my questions are:

- what type of potting mix would you pot this up in, would diatomite be ok, with a mix of zeolite and potting mix or are there some other ingredients needed for junipers
- will cuttings take easily from shimpaku, what size would be the maximum (thickness and length) and will they strike now, my propgation experience is very limited if so what is the best approach
what would be the best time to repot
- any other care tips, i am completely new to junipers

I would not Repot now unless in urgent need, but a good Bonsai mix with added Gravel ( Diatomite, Zeolite etc ) if you are unsure

Yes you can take cuttings now from old wood
Use a hardwood rooting hormone and place into a cutting tray and cover
Keep warm and humid out of direct sunlight and hope :-)

Yeah a book i have says, don't prune in summer :P
Wiring - when ever
Pinch out the new buds to promote closer growth
not sure on fertilisers
the tree can usually take fullsun
