yeh all elms tolerate a hard cut back quite easily and grow back in force. its always a little risky doing so this time of year. best done just before bud break. although u air layers an elm and removed it two weeks ago and the base left behind has shot in 100 pleaces

There are better options for that plant. I was going to comment in the other thread
That tree, has no substantial branches. Cutting it back is only going to set you back a few years.
Personally I would let it grow out, fertilize and it will re-shoot on the trunk for new branches, as you have already removed alot of foliage.
You should quote the thread of where there are pics when starting a new thread. When you post a thread like this, it can give you false replies.
I think you need to know where you are heading with the plant before continuing. Let us know the style etc, you want in the other thread and we can advice on "cutting back" in there.

Sorry astro, not trying to "cut" you off, but I think we all sometimes need to stop and contemplate.
The material is of a substantial size, and may make a very nice bonsai. Nice trunk but we need to choose some lines before cutting back.
Could do with a bit more of a trim, but I'd keep the growth it has now, feed like nothing else through summer, providing more options as is needed.
